Myth or fact?

A parent asks

A newborn needs a full bath every day to stay clean.

Routine-care advice

What the evidence says

A newborn does not need a full bath every day. NHS guidance says 2 or 3 baths a week can be enough.

Where it gets nuanced

A daily bath is not automatically a problem if you and your baby enjoy it and it is done safely. The point is that daily bathing is not a hygiene requirement.

The Harmony Bridge

You can choose a bathing rhythm that works for your family. Between baths, clean the face, neck, hands and nappy area as needed.

Talking about it at home

If you need to explain this to family

You could say: “A daily bath can be part of our routine if it works for us, but it isn’t necessary just to keep the baby clean. Two or three baths a week can be enough.”
